Sparta had slaves called Helots. These were Messenians taken from Helos city during the Messenian Wars. They were harshly treated by their masters and would often resort to rebellion.
Although Helots were owned by the state, they could have families and live in their own houses and communities.
As Spartan Warriors were normally away fighting, in Sparta it is stated that there were more Helots than Spartans at a ratio of 4 to 1. Helot rebellion became quite common.
Helots would undertake all daily chores including household cooking and cleaning, working in the fields and growing crops. This left the women to raise the children and themselves, to be strong and athletic.
